Background
The District is surrounded by Bay of Bengal in its South and Balasore District of Orissa, Paschim Medinipur in West and north/ Howrah and 24 Pargansas District in East. The important rivers, i.e Rxipnarayan, Haldi, Kansabati and Kalegahi flow the water in the period from June to October.
As per Census report of 2001 the populating of the Purba Medinipur was 4.48 millions. The projected population would be 5.50 million at the end of XI th 5year plan (2011-2012). This district has a land areas of 4,30,140 hector. Which is 4.7% of geographical area of state where 5.58% of population of the state are living.
