Background:

Bankura, the fourth largest district of West Bengal is located in the western part of the state, which is popularly known as ‘Rarh’ from time immemorial. It forms a part of the Bardhaman Division. It is bounded by Paschim Medinipur in the south and Hooghly district in the north, Purulia district in the west, and Bardhaman district in the north and east. In shape, it resembles an isosceles triangle wedged in between Purulia and Bardhaman, with its apex nearly opposite Raniganj and with an irregular baseline resting on Paschim Medinipur and Hooghly. Bankura is drained by Damodar, Dwarakeswar, and Kangsabati rivers along with their tributaries of which Gandheswari, Silai, and Kumari deserve separate mention. This district has a moderate deposit of Coal and a number of good deposits of China Clay. As Census 2001 data reveals, it ranks 12th in the state so far as total population is concerned.

Weaver Work-Shed, Hand Loom, and Charkha have been provided to the total 160 Nos. of beneficiaries under Sonamukhi Block through Project Muslin.   320 Nos. of Dokra Artisans at Bikna Village under Bankura-II Block have been provided Skill Development Training, Common Production Centre (CPC), Tool-Kits, Modern Furnace, Hand Gloves, Mask, Shoe, Revolving Fund and Marketing Support under Rural Crafts Hub Development Project.   270 Nos. of Terracotta Artisans at Panchmura Village under Taldangra Block have been provided Skill Development Training, Common Production Centre (CPC), Raw -Material, Revolving Fund, and Marketing Support under Rural Crafts Hub Development Project. 100 Nos. of Bee Hives Boxes, Skill Development Training, Marketing Support & Credit Linkage Facilities have been provided to 100 Nos. of Artisan of 20 SHG in Convergence with Matir Sristi Project at Ranibandh.
