2nd April 1920, the Congress Working Committee finalized Indian flag using Khadi. And Khadi became an integral part of non-cooperation movement. Non-cooperation movement witnessed bonfires of foreign cloth lit the sky everywhere and the hum of spinning wheel rose like a sacrificial chant in lakhs of homes.
December 1923, Kakinada Congress established All India Khaddar Board under the Chairmanship of Jamunalal Bajaj. Decided to establish a separate outfit to carry on Khadi work.
On 23rd September 1925, All India Charkha Sangh was established under the Chairmanship of Gandhiji Shri Nehuru and Shri S. L. Banker were its Secretaries. Gandhiji remained its Chairman so long he was alive.
On another front Acharya J. B. Kripalani getting inspired by an address made by Gandhiji at BHU on 27th November 1920, set up Shri Gandhi Ashram at Varanasi on 29th November 1920 and started production and sales activity with a meager, capital of Rs. 280/-. It became the first institution to organize khadi activity and organized first Khadi exhibition in 1927.
By that time Charkha Sangh was established and it took up Khadi activity with the fund (Rs. 25.00 lakhs) accumulated by Tilakji.
In the year 1930, by virtue of an agreement entered between All India Spinners Association., Shri Gandhi Ashram (AISA & SGA), SGA started working as a managing agent for the Khadi activity. Later on HQ of SGA was shifted to Meerut.
Gandhiji wanted to establish an institution through merger of all institutions that were set up to handle different constructive work and fixed a meeting on 3rd & 4th February 1948 at Wardha. The meeting could not be held on that day because of his assassination on 30th January.
In a meeting held on 13th and 14th March 1948 resolution was taken to build up Sarvodaya Samaj and in tune with this resolution Sarvodaya Seva Sangh was established in 1949. later on it set up a Khadi Samity to look after Khadi activity.
On the request of Sarvodaya Sangh, Government of India established All India KVI Board on 1953.
Later on and on 1st April 1957 Khadi and Village Industries Commission were established by an act of Parliament passed in the year 1956.
On 9th November 1981, Acharya Vinoba Bhave established Khadi Mission, which is working as confederation Khadi institutions.
